Fontainebleau State Park Cabins On Lake Pontchartrain

Among the many facilities with which Saint Tammany Parish is blessed is Fontainebleau State Park. This park, which stretches over around 2,800 acres of ground, is situated just outside the town of Mandeville, and enjoys a beautiful setting along the northern banks of Lake Pontchartrain. The land was once used for industrial purposes – in the 19th century it was the site of both a substantial brick yard and an important sugar plantation – but those days are long gone. Now, it provides an excellent “green lung” where city dwellers and visitors alike can come to relax and enjoy a wealth of recreational activities.

History Of Fontainebleau State Park

The park is named after the Fontainebleau Forest in France, close to Paris. The name was given to the land which was owned in the area by the industrialist, Bernard de Marigny, who traced his origins back to that part of France. The park itself started life under another name: Tchefuncte State Park. This comes from the Tchefuncte River nearby, and also gave its name to the Conservation Reservation that was part of the original park’s area. Nowadays, Fontainebleau State Park is better known for its links with the Scout movement: both Boy and Girl Scouts hold frequent events and activities here.

Fontainebleau State Park Camping

The park is suitable for both day visitors and overnight stayers. If you’re looking to camp here, there is a total of 12 cabins. Half of these have facilities making them suitable for disabled people. There are just over 160 campsites, split between tenting and RV areas. Many of these, though not all, have modern facilities such as RV dump stations, electricity points, and water on tap. There are also a good number of comfort stations, where you will also be able to get a shower. For younger visitors, safe playground areas are scattered around the park. Larger groups can make use of the lodge, as well as three group camps.

Things To Do At Fontainebleau State Park

For those who are visiting Fontainebleau State Park for the day, among its main attractions is its pair of trails. There is a short nature trail, a little over one mile in length, which includes a nicely designed boardwalk feature allowing you to get right out into the marshland. Here, you can view a wide range of wildlife and plant species native to the area, some of which is conserved. For those who are looking for a longer trip, a hiking trail stretches for just under five miles. The playground is also available to day visitors, as is the nearby picnic area and pleasantly designed pavilion.

Fontainebleau State Park is surrounded by water on three sides: as well as Lake Pontchartrain itself, it is also bounded by Bayou Castin and Bayou Cane. It’s therefore not surprising that the park makes good use of its natural resources. There is an attractive, safe beach as well as a fishing pond. For more serious anglers, a fishing pier can also be utilized. The park is also traversed by the 31-mile Tammany Trace, a rail-trail conversion of a disused railroad line suitable for hikers, cyclists, and inline skaters. Horse riders can use a parallel trail. If you want to find out more about the park, there is an excellent Visitors’ Center, which contains a number of highly informative displays and interactive features. Naturally, there’s also a gift shop.

We hope you enjoy your stay or visit to Fontainebleau State Park in Saint Tammany Parish, LA.
