Another great place to visit in Saint Tammany Parish, especially if you have good walking shoes, is the Slidell Historic Antique District. Located at 124 Erlanger Avenue, Slidell, LA, this amazing area will have you spending hours just walking around visiting different antique shops.

The Slidell Antique District covers several blocks and includes a coffee internet cafe. Make sure you visit the Who Dat Shop in honor of the New Orleans Saints along with the Old Jail House Museum.

The antique shops run the length of Interstate 12 starting in Slidell and ending in Denham Springs. Covington and Ponchatoula have and old downtown district with antique shops and historic buildings. All these towns have fairs and festivals in the old downtown areas.

Be sure to check out other great things like:

• The Slidell Museum,
• Terry Lynn’s Cafe and Creative Catering
• The Magnolia House Antique Mall
• Marcie’s Antique Boutique
• John’s Antique and Collectibles
• Guilty Treasures
• Barbara’s Victorian Closet and Antique Mall including Aunt Tiques and Curiosities

The fun thing about visiting these areas, is that some of them are reminiscent of New Orleans nostalgia, and some of them are filled with great local street fair items. The benefit is that all of these are galleries and shops that you can pop into and you can enjoy the different things that they have on display.

For example some of these areas contain historical artifacts, as they have crystal and glassware, China from the 18th and 19th centuries, beautiful artwork, mirrors, massive armories, and chests, and wall clocks that are beautifully designed and still have amazing details.

This is a must see, as locals have worked to ensure that sites like these have been preserved, and that all of these different antiques you can see on display, even after Hurricane Katrina’s damaging effects, are part of what makes New Orleans so historic. That’s why you want to check this out.

When you have a chance to check out the Old Town Slidell Spring Street fair, make sure to look for it every April. It has hundreds of vendors who sell local items like dolls, toys, pottery, jewelry, art, glass, furniture and antiques. This is a day that you want to walk around with the kids in the stroller, and you might need a stroller for yourself! You can shop, relax, and listen to live jazz, and enjoy the day strolling through the museums, and listening to live jazz.
